Action Energy And The Carbon Trust

Action Energy is a programme run by the Carbon Trust and funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, The Scottish Executive, Invest Northern Ireland and the National Assembly for Wales. It is designed to help businesses and public sector organisations cut their energy costs through the provision of free, professional advice and assistance. Action Energy is an integral part of the Government’s climate change programme, aimed at meeting the UK's carbon reduction obligations under the Kyoto Protocol.

Action Energy provides the following services to help businesses and the public sector save significant amounts of money on their energy bills:

  • A freephone helpline, 0800 58 57 94, offering free information and practical energy saving advice
  • Online information at www.actionenergy.org.uk
  • A free review of a business’ energy use (which may include a site visit)
  • Interest-free Energy Loans – loans between £5,000 and £50,000 are available for small and medium-sized companies in England and Wales where energy makes up a significant part of operating costs
  • Design Advice including expert advice and free independent site energy assessments for new build and refurbishment projects with a floor area of 500m² or above
  • Free publications on energy saving measures across a wide spectrum of industries
  • Free local events and seminars about energy saving opportunities

Action Energy was previously known as the Energy Efficiency Best Practice programme and was created in 1989. Since its establishment, the programme has helped many organisations save up to 20% of their energy bills, which equates to total UK energy savings of around £800 million a year. These savings are not just financial; energy efficiency will play a major role in meeting the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution’s target of a 60% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2050.

Carbon Trust is a Government-backed organisation, established in April 2001, to provide UK businesses and industry with advice on reducing carbon emissions. It is a truly business-led organisation with the emphasis on providing programmes to encourage the adoption of low carbon technologies and energy efficient practices. Programmes operated by Carbon Trust comprise:

  • Energy Savings through Action Energy
  • Interest-free Energy Loans to allow businesses to invest in energy-saving equipment
  • The administration of the Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme on behalf of the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. This is a tax relief that enables businesses to claim 100% first-year capital allowances on their capital expenditure on the provision of designated energy-saving plant and machinery against their taxable profits. • The Low Carbon Innovation Programme to support the development of low carbon technologies
