SubjectRE: Solar water heating and new boilerMessage
Roxanne,
Chicken and egg situation. I am not too sure which of the two would be best for your situation and without knowing what either companies are proposing it is hard to advice you. I certainly would NOT sign a contract for design without having knowledge of what either company would propose to meet your needs. Both types should help to reduce your gas bill. Both should work in good daylight. Sunshine will not be needed. The Glycol system may be better for you, but, as I say, without better knowledge of your actual operation, it is wrong for me to advice. Critical wuestions to ask them: 1) How many solar panels would they propose? 2) How long would it take for solar energy alone to heat a full tank of cold water? 3)What size storage tank would they propose for your needs? They need to give you all that information in order to assess the cost of the installation in any case. So, don't sign contracts until they give you some answers.
