The Institute of Hospitality is one of 15 trade and professional organisations singled out for special recognition by the Carbon Trust for its achievements in the promotion of energy efficiency and carbon emissions reduction through its Hospitable Climates advisory programme for the UK hospitality industry.  In addition, in a speech to the UNWTO Ministers' summit on 13 November, the Minister of Culture, Creative Industries and Tourism – Margaret Hodge – named Hospitable Climates as a key contributor to the UK tourism industry's environmental achievements.

Three New Hospitable Climates Fact Files!

Three new Fact Files have been added to the growing portfolio of free-of-charge ‘Energy Measures Fact Files’, which lie at the heart of the Institute of Hospitality’s (formerly HCIMA) Carbon Trust-supported Hospitable Climates energy efficiency advisory programme. The new publications are: Fact File 2a – ‘Investing in New Energy Efficiency Cellar Cooling Plant’; Fact File 28 – ‘Emissions Trading and Carbon Offsetting’; and Fact File 29 – ‘Financial Incentives for Improving Energy Efficiency’.

Fact File 2a: Investing in New Energy Efficiency Cellar Cooling Plant
Cellar cooling refrigeration is an essential and integral element of modern-day pubs and other establishments serving cold drinks. Generally, plant is designed to maintain temperatures in cellars at or below 12 degrees Centigrade, making cellars one of the largest consumers of energy, accounting for as much a 20% of the total energy costs in a pub.

Fact File 2a complements the existing Fact File 2, which deals with energy efficient management of cellars in pubs and hotels. The measures described in that Fact File can reduce energy consumption in cellars by as much as 50% and should be fully implemented before consideration is given to replacement, refurbishment or up-grading existing plant. The new Fact File: 2a gives guidance on energy efficient cellar cooling technologies that are now available and should be considered when planning new buildings, refurbishment of existing cellars or replacement of existing installations.

Fact File 28: Emissions Trading and Carbon Offsetting
Carbon offsetting allows businesses to reduce, displace or offset the impact of the carbon emissions associated with energy consumption in buildings, or from travel associated with staff and/or guests. For most businesses, once actions to reduce energy consumption are well advanced, carbon offsetting is the final step in an energy management programme. Some companies use the savings from energy efficiency to fund carbon off-setting, which can be achieved by, for example, planting trees (known as carbon sequestration) or investing in donating to organisations that are developing renewable energy technologies.  Such activities are not only beneficial environmentally, but also PR-wise through, for instance, improved public image and perception as an employer.

Fact File 28 defines ‘Emissions Trading and Carbon Offsetting’ and outlines the considerations and the benefits involved, as well as details about carbon offsetting via a third-part intermediary.

Fact File 29: Financial Incentives for Improving Energy Efficiency
Participants in Hospitable Climates frequently ask about the availability of financial incentives to support projects designed to improve energy efficiency, and what other sources of information there are for the general management of the environment. Fact File 29 lists some of the support currently available free-of-charge or at low cost.

The information sheet points out that funding – especially from Government – can be subject to frequent changes and it is advisable to check the latest information before making an application for any financial support. Useful contact numbers and web sites are listed at the end of the Fact File.

  • The three new Hospitable Climates Fact-Files are available on-line (www.hospitableclimates.org.uk) for Hospitable Climates registered organisations. Those, who have not yet joined the free-of-charge energy efficiency advisory programme, can do so on-line.
